About the role

The Site Automation Leader is accountable for leading the Automation Engineering organization across Drug Product manufacturing operations, ensuring the reliable, compliant, and efficient operation of automation systems supporting Compounding, Filling, Inspection, Assembly & Packaging. The role combines strategic leadership, operational excellence, digital transformation, and people management to develop a high-performing automation organization aligned with site and business objectives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead, coach, and develop a team of Senior Automation Engineers, Automation Engineers, and Automation Technicians supporting Drug Product manufacturing operations.
  • Drive talent management activities including workforce planning, recruitment, onboarding, performance management, succession planning, and career development.
  • Serve as the key leader and escalation point for automation resources across the site and promote cross-functional teamwork between Manufacturing, Engineering, Quality, Validation, Supply Chain, ITOT, and external partners.
  • Define and execute the site automation strategy and technology roadmap, ensure standardization, lifecycle management, and continuous modernization of automation platforms.
  • Drive implementation of industry best practices, digital manufacturing technologies, and smart factory initiatives.
  • Ensure high availability and reliability of automation systems supporting manufacturing operations.
  • Lead root cause investigations and resolution of critical automation incidents and drive improvements in OEE, equipment reliability, production throughput, and process robustness.
  • Lead automation engineering resources in capital investment projects and strategic business initiatives.
  • Oversee implementation of new technologies, automation upgrades, and manufacturing system enhancements.
  • Drive Robotics, AI, and Vertical Integration initiatives supporting transformational initiatives.
  • Ensure all automation systems remain inspection-ready and compliant with GMP, Data Integrity, and cybersecurity requirements.
  • Lead automation-related deviations, CAPAs, change controls, audits, and validation activities.
  • Act as a key member of the Site Engineering and ITOT leadership community, responsible for organizational capability, talent pipeline, resource allocation, budget utilization, and delivery of automation services.

Essential Requirements

  • 10+ years of experience in OT Automation, Industrial Automation, Manufacturing Systems, or Digital Manufacturing within a regulated industry.
  • 5+ years of people leadership experience managing automation engineers, technicians, project teams, and external partners.
  • Strong expertise in PLC, SCADA, HMI, industrial networks, and OT infrastructure with the ability to ensure reliable and compliant operations.
  • Hands-on experience with MES, Electronic Batch Records, Review by Exception, and Vertical Integration across manufacturing systems.
  • Proven experience delivering automation and digital transformation programs, including capital projects and Smart Factory initiatives.
  • Strong understanding of AI, advanced analytics, and data-driven manufacturing, including Power BI, manufacturing data platforms, and AI-enabled use cases.
  • Deep knowledge of GMP/GxP, Computer System Validation, Data Integrity, and Quality Risk Management in pharmaceutical manufacturing environments.
  • Ability to define and execute a multi-year Site Automation Strategy aligning Robotics, Process Automation, AI, and Operational Excellence initiatives with business objectives.
  • Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills with demonstrated success influencing senior leaders, driving organizational change, and developing high-performing teams.
  • Fluency in German and English.

Desirable Requirements

  • Knowledge of Robotics, AGVs/AMRs, machine vision, and advanced manufacturing technologies to support autonomous operations.

Rund 3.300 Menschen arbeiten in Österreich für Novartis. Sie tun das an drei Orten: in Kundl und Schaftenau in Tirol, wo Wirkstoffe aus Zellkulturen entstehen, und in Wien, wo daraus zugelassene Medikamente werden. Über diesen Standorten steht die Novartis Holding GmbH mit Sitz in Wien-Leopoldstadt, die die österreichischen Novartis-Gesellschaften bündelt und der Novartis AG in Basel gehört.

In Kundl ging im Oktober 2025 eine neue Zellkulturanlage in Betrieb. Sie produziert monoklonale Antikörper, also große Moleküle, die gegen Autoimmun- und rheumatische Erkrankungen sowie Multiple Sklerose eingesetzt werden. 1,8 Millionen Liter Fermentationsvolumen pro Jahr. Zusammen mit der Schwesteranlage im nahen Schaftenau, die 2024 anlief, zählen die beiden Werke nach Angaben des Unternehmens zu den produktivsten im weltweiten Novartis-Netzwerk. Dahinter steht eine im Februar 2024 angekündigte Investition von rund 500 Millionen Euro, mit der 350 neue Arbeitsplätze in Tirol entstehen, 180 davon in Kundl und 165 in Schaftenau.

In Wien sieht der Arbeitstag anders aus. Hier bearbeiten Teams Zulassungsdossiers, überwachen die Arzneimittelsicherheit und beantworten medizinische Fachanfragen von Ärztinnen und Apothekern. Entsprechend weit reicht das Berufsspektrum über die Pharmazie hinaus. An den Anlagen in Tirol stehen Chemieverfahrenstechnikerinnen und Mechatroniker, im Labor prüft die Qualitätssicherung jede Charge, dazu kommen Rollen in Supply Chain, Einkauf und Personalentwicklung.

Lehrlinge bildet Novartis in Österreich seit 1954 aus. Fünf Lehrberufe stehen zur Wahl. Wer etwa in der Labortechnik für Biochemie und Biotechnologie beginnt, lernt im Betrieb, in der Berufsschule und im firmeneigenen Training Center in Kundl. Die beiden Tiroler Standorte gehören damit zu den größten Ausbildungsbetrieben der Region.

Das internationale Top Employers Institute hat Novartis Österreich für 2026 zum achten Mal in Folge als Top Employer zertifiziert, mit rund 98 Prozent im Bereich Organisation, digitale HR und Arbeitsumfeld. Konkret bedeutet das unter anderem 14 Wochen bezahlte Elternzeit für Mütter und Väter, Kinderbetreuung am Standort, Sabbaticals von bis zu einem Jahr und eine Kostenübernahme von 25 bis 100 Prozent für Weiterbildungen. Die Holding selbst führt keine eigenen Beschäftigtenzahlen, angestellt sind die Mitarbeitenden bei den operativen Gesellschaften. Der Tiroler Campus soll ab 2026 CO2-neutral produzieren.
