The Research Institute of Molecular Pathology (IMP), the Institute of Molecular Biotechnology (IMBA), and the Gregor Mendel Institute (GMI) are international research institutes dedicated to excellent curiosity-driven research in molecular biology. The institutes are located at the Vienna BioCenter, one of Europe's leading life sciences hubs, bringing together research institutes, universities and biotech companies in Vienna. We are seeking an experienced and motivated

Head of Molecular Robotics Genomics Tech Platform and Scientific Core Facilities (f/m/d)

The scientific core facilities of GMI, IMBA and IMP give researchers access to world-class technology. Their comprehensive service portfolio spans bioinformatics, biooptics, media preparation, as well as molecular biology services, molecular tool development, peptide synthesis, and proteomics.

In this dual role, you will establish and lead the newly formed Molecular Robotics Genomics team while simultaneously providing leadership for the broader core facilities and their technology platforms at the institutional level.

Your responsibilities:

As Head of Molecular Robotics Genomics, you will:

  • Build and establish the new Molecular Robotics Genomics unit by expanding and updating existing scientific and technological capabilities
  • Provide scientific and technical leadership for molecular biology activities
  • Lead a team of scientists and technical staff, fostering scientific excellence, innovation, and professional growth
  • Develop and implement advanced molecular genetics and high-throughput biology workflows, integrating state-of-the-art laboratory automation and robotic technologies
  • Drive the development of new screening approaches, reporter systems, and automated robotics pipelines in close collaboration with research laboratories
  • Initiate and participate in scientific collaborations with research groups
  • Ensure high-quality service delivery while continuously improving workflows, technologies, and operational efficiency

As Head of Scientific Core Facilities, you will:

  • Lead across multiple technology platforms, fostering a collaborative culture among facility leaders and shaping the long-term scientific and technological development of the facility units
  • Represent the internal research facilities to Management and contribute to strategic planning and decision-making
  • Continuously scout, evaluate, and implement emerging technologies, methodologies, and laboratory processes to strengthen institutional research capabilities
  • Identify national and European funding opportunities, contribute to the technical development of grant applications, and coordinate multi-platform strategic initiatives
  • Strengthen communication and strategic alignment with the Vienna BioCenter Facilities (VBCF) and other institutional stakeholders

Your profile:

  • PhD in Molecular Biology, Genetics, Biotechnology, or a related life sciences discipline
  • At least 5 years of expertise in developing innovative molecular biology technologies, screening platforms, reporter systems, or related research infrastructure.
  • Extensive experience with technology evaluation, infrastructure development, and implementation of robotic platforms and automated experimental workflows.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience, including managing scientific or technical teams and supporting the professional development of staff
  • Strategic mindset with the ability to lead interdisciplinary projects and establish successful collaborations with researchers across multiple scientific disciplines
  • Experience contributing to collaborative grant proposals and familiarity with national and European research funding programs are an advantage.
  • Excellent communication, stakeholder management, and organizational skills, with the ability to engage effectively with scientists, facility leaders, and institutional management.
  • A collaborative, solution-oriented leadership style with a strong commitment to scientific excellence, innovation, and service quality.
  • Excellent English language skills; German is an advantage.

Our offer:

The institutes, embedded in the Vienna BioCenter, offer the opportunity to work in a dynamic, international, and interdisciplinary research environment. We provide excellent benefits, including a child support center, subsidized cafeteria, and opportunities for professional development and continuous learning.

We look forward to receiving your application. Please apply online and upload your CV, a motivation letter, and any additional documents relevant to the position.

Wien
